Job Description

Trail Crew Summer Internship Position

The Town of Carrabassett Valley located in the western mountains of Maine is requesting applications for paid positions-Trail Crew Internship Position for the 2024 season, specifically June through August. The Trail Crew constructs new trails specific to mountain biking and also maintains trails for both bicycles and Nordic skiers. We currently have projects in place for the 2024-2026 build seasons and expect that our development will continue to expand well into the future. We work closely with our partners: The New England Mountain Bicycle Association, Maine Huts and Trails and Sugarloaf Corporation to execute this development of a world class trail network for riders of all abilities.

We are seeking area youth ages 14-19 interested in learning the art and science of sustainable trail construction. Bicycle trail construction and network management is a growing industry in the changing forest economies of western and northern Maine. This position seeks to provide opportunity for young folks to experience these new professions first hand. Additional skills such as mechanics, certified first aid, multi-media/video production, avid mountain bicycle or dirt bike rider will all be considered during the application process. References will be required to satisfy qualifications.

General Internship Tasks Include:

• Ability to work outside in the woods of Maine in all weather conditions
• Ability to prioritize safety, understand dangerous situations and mitigations
• Ability to hike to, from, and remain in remote job site locations over uneven terrain 1-3 miles per day, 8-10 hours a day
• Ability to be physically active throughout the day
• Ability to follow directions, learn from directions and become self-guiding.
• Ability to work in a small team atmosphere, with importance based on quality work, respectful interactions and attentions to detail.
