Choose Your Own Adventure: Welcoming & Preparing Trail Users with Disabilities

Virtual Training

Webinar Program Administration

Accessibility for one person may not be accessible for another. Because of this, including a general statement that something is accessible (or not accessible) doesn’t tell the whole story. During this session, we will help you look at your planning through a different lens.

Webinar Outline

Understanding and implementing trails that meet the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) as well as the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines is important. It is the foundation and a start for creating accessibility for trail users with disabilities but it doesn’t stop there. Once you have implemented these guidelines, you’re ready for the next level allowing people to choose their own adventure!

During this session, we will help you look at your planning through a different lens. Accessibility for one person may not be accessible for another. Because of this, including a general statement that something is accessible (or not accessible) doesn’t tell the whole story. Having this awareness can make it seem difficult, but the good news is that it doesn’t have to be.

Join Jaime Head and Jenna Udenberg, both of whom are wheelchair users with years of lived experience navigating the outdoors, as they help you to intentionally shape your story to provide your trail users with the best experience. We’ll look at what trail users need to know before determining what’s accessible and do-able for them. We’ll talk through ideas for promoting your trails, trailhead, and amenities and learn how to apply them for multiple trail uses and locations. The more we know, the more welcoming we can be for all people!

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn to create more inclusive and welcoming spaces for your trails, trailheads, and their amenities.
  • Begin to understand about the importance of the use of language, vocabulary, and labels as it relates to disability community and culture.
  • Develop ideas to implement actionable steps to make your programs, spaces, and promotional materials more usable by all people.
  • Apply the philosophy of “When we know better, we do better” as you plan for the future.
