Rigging for Trail Work
Trail Competencies
-
Summary
Manual and training material about how to use specialized equipment to safely move heavy objects from one location to another.
Overview
Rigging is the technique of using cables, chains, and ropes with winches, hoists, and other mechanical equipment to move heavy objects from one location to another. Trail managers use rigging to move large boulders up and down slopes, pull root large wads, set bridge stringers into place, and many other applications. Training and experience are necessary to use these techniques safely.
The Forest Service developed the Rigging for Trail Work publication and accompanying training materials to provide information on the specialized equipment, theory, project planning, techniques, and safety practices used in rigging. The publication and training materials are not replacements for official classroom and field instruction by a qualified rigging instructor. The Forest Service does not have a rigging policy; rather rigging guidance and safety standards follow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
