Overview

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) is the national standard for all traffic control devices (TCD). TCD are signs, markings, pavement markings, and other devices used to control traffic on all roads open to public travel. TCD shall be constructed, located, installed, and maintained according to the standards contained in the MUTCD. The MUTCD has been adopted by the Forest Service and has been supplemented with the direction in the EM 7100-15 “Sign and Poster Guidelines for the Forest Service.” The Forest Service is required by 23 CFR 655.603(b)(3) to revise the EM 7100- 15 to be in substantial conformance with changes to the National MUTCD within 2 years of the effective date of the Final Rule for the changes. Some devices in previous editions of the MUTCD have been changed, deleted, and/or added.
