I'm in the process of building McDowell Tech Trail School into a national-level Trail Construction program. The school was founded as part of McDowell Tech Community College in early 2022. When I'm not setting up classes and writing grant proposals, I'm out building new trail, working for a local forestry company, serving as a Trail Crew Leader for the G5 Trail Collective in Old Fort, NC or shuttling MTB riders to upper trail heads on Mt. Mitchell with my company Mountain Top Shuttles. Work less, ride more... I'm trying.

Join Trase Sowell of Geosculpt Trail Designs as he shares his method of trail design, layout, machine build and hand finishing on features including: filter features, rollers, berms, racer tables, step-down, step-up and A-B lines. You’ll examine trail flow and trail speed as it applies to designing and building trails that can be ridden by both beginner and expert riders. The instructor will operate a mini-excavator while demonstrating and explaining machine techniques (This is not a machine class. Students will not operate heavy equipment.) Students will be instructed in all aspects of design, build, finish and will be participating in hand finishing of the trail including: feature shaping, back slope shaping, slap packing, root removal, trail tread packing, drain shaping/water management.

Hand Built Trails is a course for trail builders, volunteer coordinators, volunteers, land managers and anyone interested in the process of trail flagging, corridor clearing and hand building trails. The class will begin with an overview of Sustainable Trail Construction basics and terminology along with covering the goals for the course. After we learn the basics, we'll head out to Pisgah National Forest near Old Fort, NC where 33 miles of new trails are under construction including several trail reroutes. Class participants will learn through hands on field work while completing one or more reroute sections on USFS trails. Instructors: Jon Lane, G5 Trail Collective; Jeremy Poore, McDowell Tech Trail School; Lisa Jennings, U.S. Forest Service
