Trail Crew Leader 2-Day Intensive (In Person)

Old Fort, North Carolina

Workshop Trail Maintenance Crew Management

This two‐day course is geared for trail volunteers and will cover natural surface trail design, construction, maintenance and crew leader training. The focus is teaching you about long term sustainability that can reduce overall maintenance needs and user impacts on natural resources.

Developed over the course of 25+ years, the Trail Crew Leader training began in Georgia with Mike Riter and the IMBA Trail Care Crew. The training has evolved over the years as the trail construction industry practices have solidified. Walt Bready of Trails B-Ready teaches the course regularly around the South East and has brought the training to Western North Carolina via McDowell Tech Trail School.

Day 1 begins with sustainable trail design and construction. Each day includes morning classroom time and afternoon field exercises in Pisgah National Forest. Field exercises on day one include clinometer training and trail layout.

Day 2 continues with train maintenance basics and then moves on to crew leadership. The course covers everything from clearing drains and brushing trails to how best to set up a trail day, lead an effective project and keep all of your volunteers safe and happy. Field exercises include safety talk practice, drain clearing, team leadership and light brushing.

Train and stay in beautiful Old Fort, NC. This is a destination training! Stay in town or at a nearby campground, attend classes, complete trail training and play. Old Fort boasts world class trails for MTB, hiking and trail running as well as stocked trout waters for fishing. Enjoy our breweries, winery and food.
