Since 2022, Julian has served as the AmeriCorps Grant Coordinator for the CCC's Backcountry Trails Program. He got his start as a CCC Backcountry corpsmember with the Trinity Alps crew in 2009 and went on to work 20 seasons of trails in many different parks and forests around the country. He served as a Backcountry sponsor (2010, 2014, 2015), a Backcountry Supervisor (2013), and spent many summer and winter seasons in the backcountry as a trail work lead in Kings Canyon, Zion, Big Bend, and Mount Rainier National Parks (2011–2022). He also served two stints running crews for the Texas Conservation Corps (2012) and the Washington Conservation Corps (2018).

All this time on trails and many conversations with his peers and mentors inspired him to earn a Master’s in Environmental Studies from the Evergreen State College in 2020. There he explored the nuances and challenges of how conservation corps crews and land agency project partners foster meaningful mentorship and community in the backcountry workforce. His experiences in the backcountry also influence his work as an artist versed in film and darkroom experimentation, stained glass, and painting. He likes heavy metal, pumpkin soup, and photographing his cat.
