Larry Knutson, is founder and President of Penn Trails LLC. A cloud based company for 16 years, we work with clients nationwide providing trail assessments, planning, designing, project & construction management, educational workshops. Penn Trails is largely engaged with land trusts and conservancies. Knutson is the lead author of Trails for All People: Guidance for Accessibility and Inclusive Design, published by The Pennsylvania Land Trust (PALTA) and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR). Focused on accessible trails for non-federal entities, it is utilized around the country by land trusts, conservation organizations, land managers, landscape architects and others involved in public trails planning, design and programming.

Join Larry Knutson of Penn Trails as he instructs you in choosing a site, assessing the tenets of trail sustainability, and the rules to live by in outlining your trail system. This three-hour session will cover the planning concepts that are crucial to understand before taking on a trail project. This “how to plan” workshop will participants with working knowledge that is key to engaging a sustainable trail project with professional designers, contractors, volunteer entities, or your own resources.

With trail users growing and diversifying, and communities desiring more close to home trails, wider shared use/universally accessible trails might be needed to meet the demand and volume of these trail users (walkers, joggers, families with strollers, bikes, etc.). This session will detail how to assess when you need a wider shared use path vs a narrower walkway, and go into analysis of the site, appropriate trail design and construction, and how to achieve universal accessibility.
