Join Appalachian Mountain Club for a trail building workshop at Germany Hill in Philadelphia in partnership with the Roxborough-Manayunk Conservancy. Participants will learn how to properly clear trail corridor and close old social trails in a combination of classroom style and hands-on lessons.
This workshop is beginner-friendly and will cover the following topics:
-Plant identification: Identify common native and invasive plants in this area.
-Brushing & Pruning: Use pruning and brushing techniques to maximize safety, minimize visual impacts, and support healthy trailside vegetation (i.e. avoid damage to growth collar of pruned limbs, cutting saplings flush to ground, deposit clipped limbs cut side away from trail).
-Bucking & Limbing: Use proper PPE and work safe distance from cutting zone. Brushing, bucking and limbing logs in minimally complex situations using handsaws.
-Materials & Debris Management: Deposit materials from corridor using low impact techniques that do not alter natural hydrologic flow.
-Closing Trail: How to close unwanted trails through naturalizing and promoting new plant growth
