If you are a veteran trail maintainer this second webinar, "Natural Surface Trail Tread Maintenance ~ Part 2 of 3," will present some ideas on how you might pass along the skill to others. If you are just developing your skill set, you will get information to consider so you can make good decisions on the trail to maximize your effectiveness, it is appropriate for both agency personnel and volunteers.

This workshop will introduce the concept of managing the surface flow of water on a trail tread. Participants will review and understand the application and purpose of a Grade Dip, Waterbar, Check Dam and Berm Removal in managing the surface flow of water on a trail tread. Students will better understand the dynamic impact of water on the trail tread surface and how these types of structures may impact the sustainability of the trail and the recreational experience.

Presenter Bios

Kim Frederick

Kim Frederick, Principal

Kim Frederick has over 45 years of experience in the design, development and management of recreational trail systems throughout the United States and Internationally. In 1981, he started Chinook Associates LLC a Recreational Trail Consulting firm that provides support to agencies and organization in Trail: Planning, Design, Construction and Management. From 1978-2018 he worked for Jefferson County Open Space as the Trail Supervisor where he was responsible for the design, development and management of a 250-mile trail system that experiences over 5 million visitors per year. As a Founding Member and Board Chairperson for the Colorado Outdoor Training Initiative from 1998-2007 Kim created a successful partnership of over 40 Federal, State, Local Government and NGO's to develop and deliver stewardship curriculum throughout the United States. Since 2018, he has been an Adjunct Instructor at Red Rocks Community College.
