The Arizona Trail Association's Trail Skills Institute is aimed at volunteers and professionals who wish to expand their skills and confidence in basic trail maintenance and construction techniques and theory. All trainings emphasize hands-on practice of skills with high instructor contact. This Module 3 training covers the basic of stone trail structures including dry stone masonry and technical trail features. Actual work completed will be determined by the nature of the project selected for hands-on work.
MODULE 3: TRAIL STRUCTURES
• Why build structures?
• Principles of dry stone masonry
• Moving, splitting shaping and stacking stone
• Steps, walls, rock armoring (tread and drain pans)
• Drainage structures
• Technical trail features (TTFs)
Other important elements integrated into the trainings include event planning; tool maintenance; leadership, inspiration and motivation; and "The User Experience: How trail workers can add or detract from the experience."
