2025 Shawnee Mission Park, Ks
Role: Designer, Builder
The Prairie Bike Park is a newly-revamped mountain-bike / skills-area facility located inside Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee, Kansas, developed by the Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) in collaboration with trail-building partners.
Purpose & Goals
The park was created to meet rising demand for bike-trail amenities in Johnson County: the region already boasts approximately 55 miles of single-track mountain bike trails.
It is intended to serve all ages and skill levels — from beginners just learning to ride to advanced riders seeking jumps and drops.
Rather than aiming primarily for destination tourism, the project emphasizes serving the local community — offering outdoor recreation opportunities for nearby residents.
Features & Design
The revitalized facility includes:
A beginner flow-trail beginning at the edge of the woods: gradual berms and rollers designed to build confidence.
Dirt jump lines (“gravity-fed”) with varying difficulty levels (beginner → advanced) so riders can progress.
A drop zone/hub-fed skills area, where riders can try drops in a controlled setting outside the main single-track system.
The park occupies land that formerly held tennis courts, and the original trails had been mostly volunteer built; the revitalization brought in heavier equipment and formal construction to upgrade the experience.
Location & Context
The park sits within Shawnee Mission Park (which is 1,655 acres with a 120-acre lake, 19 miles of singletrack, dog-off-leash area, etc.).
Johnson County Park and Recreation
Its location inside an established park means users benefit from other amenities (parking, access, restrooms, etc) as well as a strong trail-system context.
The project aligns with Johnson County’s broader trail-building initiative: enhancing outdoor recreation infrastructure to meet community demand.
Because the site remodel was significant (moving from volunteer small-scale build to heavy-equipment build), the county was able to allocated funds to build/design this project. It was built in house for $65k, by utilizing materials harvested from park property, every rock in the project was harvested, 400 yards of dirt came from park property and utilization of recycled materials to give the park that unique feel.
Key Benefits & Impacts
Skill progression venue: Beginners get a safe entry point; advanced riders get jumps/drops; the structured facility encourages progression.
Local access: For families, youth riders, casual cyclists — access to a dedicated facility within the county reduces the barrier for this type of riding.
Trail / recreation ecosystem: Strengthens the overall biking/trail network in Johnson County by adding a dedicated bike-park complementing single-track trails.
Community health & recreation: Encourages active use of park resources for biking, outdoor play, skill development — aligns with survey data showing high demand for more trails and outdoor recreation.
Considerations & Tips for Use
Because the park features progressive difficulty, riders should choose lines that match their skill level; novice riders should start with the flow trail before tackling jumps/drops.
Check trail-status advisories before riding — many trails in the park system (including mountain-bike facilities) may close due to weather, muddy conditions, or maintenance.
Use proper safety gear — helmets, pads — especially for jump/drop areas.
Park access: Use the designated parking and entry points of Shawnee Mission Park; awareness of park hours and any applicable permits is wise.
Respect the progression design: The facility is built so riders can build skills gradually; skipping ahead to advanced jumps without preparation increases risk.
Being a part of a broader recreation strategy, the park may host events or group rides — check with JCPRD or local cycling groups for upcoming activities.
