Dyrholaey Stone Steps

2024 Dyrholaey Light House

Role: Iceland Conservation Volunteer

Our crew was tasked with the job of widening a stone staircase and making it more structurally sound in a very heavily trafficked area on the Southern coast of Iceland. This staircase was built when tourism was not sustainable for the amount of foot traffic. We gathered a small amount of material on site and brought additional stones from a site 30 minutes away. We worked on this 40 foot long staircase for one week. We ensured each stone was set into the ground at least 2 feet deep and finished the project off with gargoyles as desired lines were a problem when we first arrived.
