2025 Bobcat Ridge Natural Area

In 2022 and 2023, the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Department acquired two land parcels, expanding the northern boundary of Bobcat Ridge Natural Area. In 2024, the land underwent a grassland restoration and in 2025 staff were directed to construct a trail through the area. I directed a team of specialists including archaeologists, public engagement and trail specialists, rangers, and ecologists to analyze ecological, social, cultural, and administrative impacts to determine trail feasibility. Together, we designed the alignment to avoid sensitive cultural and ecological resources including habitat for the Preble's Meadow Jumping Mouse and Moss's Elfin Butterfly. We partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to align the trail with regional standards, ensuring potential long-term connectivity with existing trail networks on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. I developed a phased implementation plan that utilized mechanized trail building techniques for heavy tread cutting. Additional trail features included three alternative lines and a load bearing bridge over a historic irrigational canal. Construction and installation of the bridge was guided in partnership with the State Historic Preservation Office. To meet the aggressive timeline, we deployed a trained volunteer workforce to handle final grading, brushing, and erosion control. The result provides access to new public land and an additional 1.75 miles of multi-use trail to the site's 20 mile stacked loop trail system.
