Mariah Keagy began her career in trail construction and reconstruction in the Green Mountains of Vermont in 1996. She has extensive knowledge of multi-use trail design and management and diverse experience in natural resources, specializing in the New England landscape.

Before returning to Vermont in 2010, Mariah worked throughout the U.S. learning about multi-use trails (hike, bike, motorized, pack and saddle, ski, and water) from the Everglades in Florida to the coastlines and peaks of Maine, to the Chugach in Alaska. She returned to New England as the Trails Supervisor for the Appalachian Mountain Club, where she managed the White Mountain trails and developed a contract crew, designing and building trails throughout New England. She has a M.S. in Environmental Studies from Antioch New England and currently serves as on the Vermont Trails and Greenways Council, and is a board member of the Professional Trail Builders Association and Green Mountain Club and its Trail Management Committee.

Mariah recently completed a Wetland’s Delineation course to assist in trail design and planning projects. In addition to decades of trail crew leadership and supervision, Mariah also has a background in a variety of formats of education, both formal and informal. She has designed and taught workshops and trainings in all aspects of hand-built trail construction, trail crew leadership, rigging, rock breaking and shaping, tool care and maintenance, body mechanics/ergonomics, axe care and use, crew leadership, and backcountry camp/crew management. She was an instructor of "Tools and Their Applications" at Sterling College for 5 years. She has formal training in education as a licensed science educator in Vermont, and her recent trail education projects include: curriculum development for a year long Sustainable Trails Certification course for Northern Vermont University, and assisting with the Trail Skills level development (as part of the Trail Skills Project), building out from the Core Competency Framework. In 2023/24 Mariah worked with PTBA to take a lead role in the development of a Trail Technician Exam, a project of the Northwest Arkansas Community College, set to launch in 2025. She is currently working with the Vermont Mountain Bike Association on developing Best Management Practices for VMBA trails in the areas of trail construction and maintenance, with planning and design to follow.
