Job Description

Experienced Trail Machine Operator
Progressive Trail Design – Nationwide Travel Required
Progressive Trail Design (PTD) is seeking an experienced Trail Machine Operator to join our nationally recognized trail-building team. This position is ideal for highly skilled operators who take pride in craftsmanship, precision, and teamwork — and who want to help shape world-class trail experiences across the U.S. and beyond.
Position Overview:
The Machine Operator (MO) works directly under the Crew Foreman or Trail Boss, playing a critical role in executing daily and weekly production goals. The ideal candidate is confident operating trail equipment such as:
• Mini-excavators (Kubota KX-018–KX-085 range)
• Sutter 300 or 500 Trail Dozers
• Skid-steers or other specialized equipment
This position is hands-on. The MO assists with finish work behind the machines, leads by example, and helps coach newer crew members in the field. A true team player, the MO balances technical skill with leadership, problem-solving, and pride in delivering top-tier trail experiences.
Key Responsibilities
• Execute and fine-tune trail alignments based on design plans and field conditions
• Flag, GPS, and interpret design drawings, making sound judgment calls when necessary
• Perform daily machine maintenance, inspections, and lubrication routines
• Collaborate with the Foreman to plan and execute production goals
• Support ground labor to ensure continuous finished trail behind the machine
• Lead and mentor newer crew members through example and coaching
• Think creatively and adapt to terrain challenges and changing conditions
• Maintain a team-oriented, safety-first, and high-performance work ethic
Requirements
• Minimum 2 years of full-time operating experience (trail building preferred)
• Strong understanding of trail design principles and flow
• Ability to read and follow flag lines and construction documents
• Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and results-driven
• Ability to travel for up to 2 months at a time (remote and occasional international projects)
• Must be dependable, professional, and committed to continuous improvement
Why PTD
• Join one of the most respected trail-building firms in the world
• Work on premier trail systems and bike parks nationwide
• Competitive pay based on experience
• Benefits package that includes insurance and IRA match
• Opportunities for growth into Foreman and leadership roles
• A culture that values quality, teamwork, and craftsmanship
