Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.

Program Description:

This position will support aquatic habitat restoration and planning for brook trout and other priority species throughout the Lake Michigan Watersheds. The intern will assist U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologists through surveys on road-stream crossings to measure and identify barriers to aquatic organism passage. In addition, they will assist with brook trout monitoring before and after fish passage restoration, as well assist the tribes and the Michigan DNR with lake sturgeon work across the basin which will include streamside rearing facility on the Cedar River, MI, sturgeon lift operations on the Menominee River, WI as well as habitat mapping and larval drift. The primary responsibility of this internship will be to travel to different watersheds, some in cases at remote locations. The intern will be both working on small vessels as well as wading through streams to conduct monitoring and road stream crossing surveys. Surveys will be conducted during day trips. Some locations may be remote with a need for hiking and carrying equipment in difficult terrain and working in inclement conditions. Data collection at field sites, electronic files, and on-line mapping systems will be performed. Training and application of science through natural resource management is included. Valid drivers license and personal credit card is required.

Primary duties of this position include: Field surveys to inventory road-stream crossings and assess aquatic organism passage barriers - 45% Assisting other programs/teams with field surveys (Brook Trout monitoring, Lake Sturgeon recruitment) - 30% Training - 10% Gear and equipment upkeep and cleaning - 10% Data entry and data management - 5%

Please note that this position will include overnight travel. Expenses incurred will be reimbursed with receipts. A personal credit card is required. Estimated duty travel is 4 - 6 weeks. All travel and meals will be reimbursed, and a personal credit card is required for travel.
