Job Description

Position Dates: May 20, 2024 - August 9, 2024

Position Summary

Position Summary This 12-week, SCA-managed internship is a unique opportunity for interns to work closely with USFS staff at the District, Forest, and Regional levels. Interns will work in pairs to travel to existing facilities in national forests and collect two types of data: Facilities Master Planning (FMP) data and Facilities Condition Assessment (FCA) data. The facilities assessed by the interns are located on both administrative and recreational sites and vary greatly in complexity. Some examples include vault toilets, bathhouses, picnic shelters, wellhouses, visitor centers, work centers, and district ranger offices.



Schedule

Monday - Friday, approximately 7:00am-4:00pm, with federal holidays off



Key Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include; FMP Data Collection: using a tablet and ArcGIS Survey123 and Field Maps to collect site and mapping data for each facility; FCA Data Collection: performing building condition assessments using established procedures, identifying needed maintenance or repairs and calculating quantities of work; Areas of assessment include but are not limited to: building envelope, structural elements, interior soundness, health and safety requirements, accessibility requirements, building code compliance; Taking photos of each building and any maintenance or repairs needed; Organizing travel and project logistics when moving between Forest districts, to include coordinating housing accommodations, managing a budget, and scheduling meetings;



Marginal Duties

Completing administrative tasks accurately and on time;



Required Qualifications

Must be 21+ years old and possess U.S. citizenship; Interns must possess a valid drivers license, have a minimum of 3 years of state-authorized driving experience, and be able to pass a comprehensive motor vehicle record check; Interns must be able to pass SCA’s background check; Wilderness First Aid/CPR certification is required and will be provided during training;



Preferred Qualifications

Strong interpersonal and communication skills; Experience using ArcGIS and FieldMaps; Currently working towards a degree in civil engineering, architecture, GIS, facilities management, or construction management, but applicants with other relevant experience are welcome to apply;



Hours

40 per week



Living Accommodations

Each team is provided with $2500/month to use to book housing accommodations as they travel. Typically, these accommodations will consist of hotels, Airbnbs, campgrounds, or government housing. Interns should expect to move to new housing accommodations on a regular basis throughout the season as they move on to new forest districts.



Compensation

Relocation travel allowance: $1100 (paid once); Living allowance: $300/week (paid bi-weekly); Commuting allowance: $300/week (paid bi-weekly)

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
