Position Title: Trail Program Manager
Position Reports To: Executive Director, Friends of the Detroit River
Position Serves: Detroit River Watershed
Office Location: Taylor, MI
Position Supervises: Volunteers
Position Status: This position is full-time (40 hours/week), FLSA exempt and salaried position with benefits including health insurance, paid holidays and vacation, flexible work schedule.
Compensation: $60,000 - $75,000 with salary determined by applicant’s level of experience, knowledge, and skills.

Both entities have a history of developing trails and creating neighborhood and community access sites to trails. They have successfully increased miles of trails, trail connections, trail programs and resources available to Downriver communities to support trail development efforts. These entities are seeking a Trail Program Manager to develop, lead and cultivate community-based efforts focused on land and water-based trail planning and development, access to nature, health and wellness, and the “blue economy”.
Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• This position will be the main point person for all DLG trail related initiatives.
• The position requires a passion for community development, working with people within and across public, private, and nonprofit sectors, and listening, understanding, and creating solutions that meet community needs.
• Identifying, securing, and managing trail grants for Downriver communities.
• Being an ambassador for the Trail Towns program within the Detroit River watershed.
• Management and oversight of contractors with trail projects.
• Developing land and water-based trails in the Downriver Linked Greenways and Friends of the Detroit River service area by coaching and advising community members who want to lead and implement Trail Town initiatives.
• Designing and managing public planning and engagement processes.
• Interacting with and building consensus among diverse stakeholders including elected and appointed officials, local associations, business owners, neighborhood associations, and the public.
• Developing trail programing with community coordination, focused on recreational cycling events.
• Implement day of event logistics and post event reporting.
• Assisting communities in accessing resources to implement place-based community development projects to connect people, trails, and waterways.
• Assisting partner communities in grant writing for trail development. Writing and managing public and private grants for collaborative projects.
• Communicating verbally and in writing with diverse audiences.
Experience and Qualifications:
• Proven success as a productive member of a team, as well as an intrinsic motivation for a job well done.
• A minimum of 3 years of trail planning, community organizing, community development, economic development, or related experience.
• Negotiation and relationship-building skills.
• Proven track record writing, managing, and executing grant-funded projects.
• A strong working knowledge of local government processes and roles including. planning and zoning enabling legislation.
• Experience initiating community connections and building meaningful relationships with diverse audiences.
• Strong verbal, written and listening communication skills, including public speaking.
• Ability to work with consultants and independent contractors.
• Ability to navigate and make decisions under pressure, ex. cycling event planning and implementation.
