The Colorado Mountain Club’s Conservation Programs aim to build tools, networks, and capacity to help land managers and outdoor enthusiasts mitigate the impacts of recreation on public lands. Through our stewardship crew program and partnerships with land management agencies, CMC completes high quality project work including trail design, construction and maintenance as well as habitat restoration, fencing, signage and more. Additionally, CMC engages local stewardship organizations and volunteers to leverage resources and expand capacity to more efficiently meet land managers goals.
Supervise CMC’s seasonal crews including the Stewardship Crew program, Monitoring Crews, and Snow Ranger programs
Recruit and hire seasonal crew leaders and members, plan and implement crew orientation, training, and conduct regular crew site visits and weekly check-ins
Oversee program logistics including management and maintenance of vehicles, tools, gear and other resources
Communicate with project partners to solicit project work, schedule crew weeks and collect program feedback
Ensure project quality and risk management expectations are met
Support public land managers in trail planning and development projects to include maintenance/construction planning
Support grant applications and reports and develop fee-for-service funding for stewardship, snow ranger and trail management projects
Oversee budgets for all projects
Other Program Duties
Support the CMC RIMS Program and advocacy initiatives
Support marketing, outreach, and recruitment of RIMS Users, including facilitating RIMS User Training & RIMS Dashboard training
Assist in planning and coordination of Conservation Department events
Maintain strong relationships with public land managers and partner organizations to foster new projects and opportunities across the state.
Remain up to date on CMC state and group conservation efforts. Support CMC group projects as time allows.
Highly organized and capable of managing data, paperwork and detailed administrative procedures.
Demonstrated experience in planning, organizing, and implementing a project from conception.
Excellent people skills, customer service orientation and cultural diversity skills.
Commitment to civic engagement in preserving our natural and cultural resources and to building a diverse pool of volunteers.
Ability to self-initiate and self-direct workflow, as well as comfortable working with a team to achieve goals. Outstanding time management and organizational skills.
Team player with initiative, determination, flexibility and a sense of humor that is looking for an opportunity to have impact in the growing citizen environmental stewardship movement while continuing to learn, grow and develop as a professional.
Computer literate including word processing, database management, and internet use; knowledge of web-based data systems.
Diverse skill set in conservation project implementation, including: trail maintenance, trail design, riparian/upland restoration, rustic timber construction, etc.
Willingness to work occasional weekends and nights based on project and meeting requirements.
Willingness and ability to travel up to 40% of the time within Colorado
Valid Colorado driver’s license.
Educational background preferred in any of the following fields: natural resources management, biological studies or environmental studies, nonprofit management, planning.
Experience in meeting facilitation.
Proficient in data collection, management, and analysis
Experience with ArcGIS
Comfort with public speaking and representing the agency/organization at public events.
Wilderness First Aid Training.
Leave No Trace Training.
Familiarity with public land management planning (NEPA) processes.

Compensation and Benefits:
CMC will offer the successful candidate a competitive compensation and benefits package, comparable to a nonprofit our size. Starting salary range: $45,000-$50,000

Location & Start Date:
The CMC Conservation Department is remotely based in Colorado. Project locations are concentrated in the central mountains. The position will require travel throughout Colorado regardless of location, with frequent trips to Salida at least for the 2023 season. We are hoping to fill the position by April.
