Job Description

Crew Leaders are responsible for the field operation of our stewardship program. They work with small staff crews, volunteers, and supervise our Wilderness Corps staff and interns. During the timeframe of our Wilderness Corps season, Crew Leaders work a rigorous schedule on backcountry trail projects.. They are also responsible for some duties in between work hitches. Crew leaders serve as a professional resource to their crews, providing exceptional trail skills, leadership, communication, and making day-to-day decisions to meet stewardship targets. They have a strong voice in project planning and are responsible for oversight of Corps crews, staff, and volunteers. Field Leadership Manage Corps crew on eight-day work hitches Serve as primary provider in First Aid and other emergency situations Develop trip itineraries and provide necessary planning to lead successful work hitches Responsibility for implementing diligent safety protocols Ensure interns are prepared for trips Provide in-depth field training for interns, volunteers, and staff on tool use, backcountry skills, safety, and general trail maintenance Maintain trails to Siskiyou Mountain Club standards Set daily goals that align with project objectives developed by Program Managers Assume responsibility for completing advanced tasks associated with projects. Supervises educational programming for interns that takes place in the field Communication Serve as primary liaison between crew and Program Managers Deliver verbal briefings, debriefings, etc. to field crews Provide guidance, direction, training and discipline to reports to maintain project objectives Lead reviews for interns Provide professional-level feedback to interns and provide succinct and comprehensive information to Executive Director Identify and report on personnel issues Provide detailed project reports that include geographic data, photos, and other information requested Maintenance, training, and other duties Ensure vehicles and tools are maintained, organized Coordinate with Program Managers to maintain tool cache Provide input for organizational and program development Serve as ambassador at SMC events Other duties as assigned Required Skills and Experience Minimum two seasons backcountry trails experience Crosscut "B" Certified, or equal proficiency Ability to carry 50 pounds for 10 miles across rough terrain Ability to supervise staff and interns on backcountry hitches Must be able to accept and work off of professional feedback from supervisors Must be able to provide feedback and follow through with subordinates Strong verbal and written communication skills Demonstrated leadership abilities Punctuality and ability to work long and odd hours Enthusiastic about working holidays and weekends Ability to work independently in remote settings Strong decision-making skills and ability to follow through At least two full seasons of backcountry trail experience Ability to coordinate with staff within and external partners First Aid/CPR Clean driving record and ability to pass SMC driving test Strong computer skills

Salary and Benefits

Position runs March 1, 2021 through October 31, 2021, with some flexibility for the right candidate. Pay is up to $20/hour. Position includes up to 1,125 hours regular time and up to 375 hours over time. Reports to Program Managers. The ideal candidate will become a permanent employee following this initial term. Benefits $500 Gear Allowance Employer health package. Employer covers 67% of health premium. Employee eligible after 60 days of full time employment.
